The Bo0ki3

A blog about books. I'll be posting reviews, weekly features, giveaways, author interviews, and other things.

Today I will be interviewing Rebecca Royce author of multiple book series including The Westervelt Wolves and The Conditioned series.

«·´`·.(*·.¸(`·.¸☆★¸.·´)¸.·*).·´`·»

What do you think makes a good story?
A captivating plot with well thought out characters.

When did you consider yourself a writer?
The day I published Her Wolf: The Westervelt Wolves Book 1

What was one the most surprising things you’ve learned in/while creating Eye Contact?
I think that Eye Contact has forced me to stretch, to think outside of several boxes and I think that I was pleased to learn I was capable to doing that.

How did you come up with the idea for Eye Contact?
I have no idea. I know that is frustrating. Its like ‘oh c’mon, how could you not know?’ but it is the truth. I’m never exactly certain where any of my ideas come from. Usually, I can name a list of several things that contribute to my stories but in the case of Eye Contact, I just have no idea.

If you had to pick one character from Eye Contact that you liked the most who would it be?
It’s hard for me to pick between Spencer and Addison, the two main characters because I adore both of them so much. I mean that. I really love them.  So I will say Roman Lewis, who is a character who appears in this book and in the next book in the series, Embraced, which is not out yet.  Roman is an enigmatic character.  I love him. I don’t know if everyone will.

Do you read reviews of your books? If so do you pay any attention to them or let them influence your writing?
I have had to stop reading certain reviews.  I do read most of them but some reviews get too far into my head and then I cannot write. But, yes, I do read 99% of the reviews I get.

How important do you think villains are in a book? Favorite book villain, any book?
In my work, villains are pivotal.  An absolute must-have.  My favorite book villain from my own work? Wow.  I’m actually not going to name a character from this series because I would argue that all of the characters in this series have the ability to be villain-like.  So, I’m going to say Kendrick Kane from my Westervelt Wolves series. He’s seriously evil.  Also, Sebastian, from my Outsider series.

What is one book or series you can’t live without, yours or other?
I can’t choose between my own.  That’s like picking between my kids. So I will say that I could not do without Nalini Singh’s ‘Psy-Changeling’ series.

Which of your characters would you be most or least liking to invite or for dinner? And why?
I would love to sit down with Spencer and pick his brain.  The man knows a lot of secrets that would be useful for me to know.

What are your favorite forms of shifters (ex, Wolves, Lion, Tigers, etc)?
LOL. In my case, it would certainly have to be the Wolves.

What is one thing you want readers to take with them after reading Eye Contact?
I hope that readers leave the book feeling like they had a really good read and that they were caught up in the world for a while with me.

Eye Contact by Rebecca Royce

The Conditioned, Book One

Thirty years ago, after the breakdown of an oil negotiation, the President of the United States decided that all people born with unusual abilities, which he would now refer to as “the condition”, would be locked away from the general public where they couldn't harm others. Parents and loved ones of these people, most of whom were children, were forced to turn them in upon penalty of death. Formed to keep the institutions secure, the Committee for the Protection of a Free Society now rules these institutions with an iron fist.

The granddaughter of one the Committee members, Addison Wade has lived her life wary of the institutions and all they represent. A woman of secrets, she is forced to turn to Safe Dawn, one of the facilities designed to hold conditioned people, when her nephew is kidnapped and, despite her best efforts, cannot be recovered. She knows the last thing anyone in 'Safe Dawn' will want to do is to help a Wade with any problems, but she is desperate and out of options.

Spencer Lewis is famous for being the premier conditioned ‘locator.’ There's no one he can't find and he has a soft spot for missing children. But, Spencer has been through a trauma and locating Jeremy Wade may be dangerous both to himself and to those around him. In addition, he takes one look at ice cold Addison Wade and wants nothing more than to knock her down a peg. Never having turned down an opportunity to help a child, he reluctantly agrees to help recover Jeremy.

In a world where nothing is as it seems and every person they encounter has his own agenda, Addison and Spencer will find that the only people they can trust are each other. But how can anyone fall in love living in a world that wants you dead just for being born?

Rebecca Royce Info

As a teenager, I would hide in my room to read my favorite romance novels when I was supposed to be doing my homework.  I hope, these days, that my parents think it was worth it.

I am the mother of three adorable boys and I am fortunate to be married to my best friend.  We live in northern New Jersey and try not to freeze too badly during the winter months.
I am in love with science fiction, fantasy, and the paranormal and try to use all of these elements in my writing.  I've been told I'm a little bloodthirsty so I hope that when you read my work you'll enjoy the action packed ride that always ends in romance. I love to write series because I love to see characters develop over time and it always makes me happy to see my favorite characters make guest appearances in other books.

In my world anything is possible, anything can happen, and you should suspect that it will.

I'd love to hear from you!

Today I have with me Carrie Ann Ryan author of An Alpha’s Path book one in the Redwood Pack series. To learn more about the book click here.

(¸.·´ ¸.·*´¨)¸.·*¨)

Hi Carrie.

Hi! Thanks for having me today!

What do you think makes a good story?

Would you want to read your book if you were a reader? That’s what I do when I write. I need a story that has conflict, yes, but it also needs to have those moments where everything is alright and people are happy. Without that, I would get frustrated. Also, the relationship needs to have chemistry, if they hero and heroine hate each other for 99% of the book, I find myself hating them as well.

What are some of your favorite books?

I’ve read over 5,000 so it’s always hard for me to choose. But I do love the Night Huntress series by Jeannine Frost, anything by Lauren Dane and the Alpha and Omega series by Patricia Briggs. They all have such deep world building that I cut myself off from the world to read them. Plus their characters call to me. J

What has been the toughest criticism you’ve gotten as an author? What’s the best?

Toughest? That Mel isn’t strong enough. I don’t agree but that’s because I find strength in different ways. I don’t think you need a kick ass heroine to actually kick ass. She can have a mind, too. However I do love those kick ass heroines. J

Best? That my book got this person through their tough time bed bound. Just wow.

What’s one of your favorite things to do in your down time?

Read. LOL Seriously, that’s all I do when I’m not working or writing. I just love it.

What is one book or series you can’t live without, yours or other?

Alpha and Omega by Patricia Briggs. It was the first adult romance I ever read and fell in love with Charles. I had to buy another copy because I broke the binding on my original one because I read it so much.

Which of your characters would you be most or least liking to invite or for dinner? And why?

Hmm… Kade. J He’s so dreamy LOL. You’ll see.

When did you consider yourself a writer?

A few weeks ago actually. I got my first email from a fan who just wanted to say hi. I’ve emailed a few authors in my day, but to actually get one myself… Yeah, that cemented the experience for me.

Do you read reviews of your books? If so do you pay any attention to them or let them influence your writing?

Yes and no. I do my best not to, but sometimes they show up in my Google Alerts LOL. If I have a friend who says “you should read this one”, then I do. And if I get a negative review in which they tell me what they think would be better, I at least think about it. But at the end of the day, it’s the authors voice that makes it into the book.

How important do you think villains are in a book? Favorite book villain, any book?

They bring on the conflict most of the time. I think they are important, but I also love the books where the hero and heroine are their own villains. (Like in An Alpha’s Path J )

Fav villain? Hmmm…. Oh geez I can’t think of one… I always like the villains in the Black Dagger Brotherhood

Why werewolves? Why were they your shifter of choice?

I’ve always loved wolfs – my sister even volunteers at a wolf preserve. I always felt that they were in tune with nature and something I could start off with. They are beautiful creatures with a history of their own.

My next series actually has more than one type of shifter so it’s been nice to venture out, but wolves will always have a special place in my heart.

What was the driving idea behind An Alpha's Path? What made you write this story?

I wanted to write a story where you look at a family of werewolves and the idea that fate chooses their mate and what would happen in their daily life. Would they fight the bond? Would the fall right in and then fight an outside force? That’s the idea behind the Redwood Pack series. An Alpha’s Path was more of – what happens when a lonely chemist finds out her blind date is werewolf? How would she react?

Thanks so much for having me here today! I had a blast!

I want to thank Carrie for being here today and you if you haven’t read An Alpha’s Path, you should. Put it on your list, you don’t want to miss this one.

Today I will doing an interview with the lovely and talented Christina Henry author of the Black Wings series. So far the series has only two books out Black Wings and Black Night, and let me tell that both books are soooooooooo good. So here it goes.

What genres do you read the most?

I really will read just about anything, but I’m especially partial to mysteries and fantasies. I also read a lot of nonfiction.

What are you reading now?

Right now I’m reading a nonfiction book called “The Male Brain”. Since I have a husband and son it’s very instructive :)

What is one book or series you can’t live without, yours or other?

Jim Butcher’s The Dresden Files is my absolute favorite series. I say this so often that I’m starting to feel like a stalker, but it’s true. I just think he is an incredible writer.

What’s one of your favorite things to do in your down time?

I have a five-year-old, so down time is kind of a distant memory for me. When I do have a few minutes to myself I like to watch movies where people get eaten up by monsters, like “The Host” and “Alien”.  I also like to bake and to train for marathons (which is necessary because I keep baking things).

Which of your characters would you be most or least liking to invite or for dinner? And why?

I would definitely want Beezle for dinner. I don’t know how much eating I’d be doing, though – I’m sure I’d be too busy laughing. And Lucifer would probably be an interesting dinner companion, although I’d be wary of making any deals with him.

When did you consider yourself a writer?

When an editor from Ace called to offer me my first contract. That was an amazing moment.

How important do you think villains are in a book? Favorite book villain, any book?

Villains are necessary because you need conflict. Without conflict, there’s really no book. Nobody wants to read a book where everyone is nice and normal and has happy endings all the time. There might be a happy ending, but I think you want your hero/heroine to earn it – they have to struggle in order to get there.

My favorite book villain is probably Deputy Sheriff Lou Ford in Jim Thompson’s “The Killer Inside Me”.

What do you think makes a good story?

Great characters. If you have great characters you show them doing almost anything and it will be interesting. One of the best books I’ve ever read is “Nobody’s Fool” by Richard Russo – it’s just a masterpiece of characterization.

What was one of the most surprising things you’ve learned in/while creating your books?

That sometimes the story has a mind of its own. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been surprised by the way a story has turned out.

What advice do you have for would be authors?

Write, write, write! Don’t wait for your muse, or for the perfect sentence, or to be in just the right mood. That perfect time will probably never come. But if you start putting words on paper and keep doing it consistently then pretty soon you’ll have a manuscript. And once you have a manuscript you have something that you can shape and mold and perfect.

Once you do have a manuscript in hand, send it out. Don’t be afraid of getting rejected. Everyone gets rejections. It’s part of the process. And as you’re collecting rejections you can keep working on your writing. The only way to get better is to keep doing it.

Thanks so much for having me here today, Shanese!
