Today I will doing an interview with the lovely and talented Christina Henry author of the Black Wings series. So far the series has only two books out Black Wings and Black Night, and let me tell that both books are soooooooooo good. So here it goes.
What genres do you read the most?
I really will read just about anything, but I’m especially partial to mysteries and fantasies. I also read a lot of nonfiction.
What are you reading now?
Right now I’m reading a nonfiction book called “The Male Brain”. Since I have a husband and son it’s very instructive :)
What is one book or series you can’t live without, yours or other?
Jim Butcher’s The Dresden Files is my absolute favorite series. I say this so often that I’m starting to feel like a stalker, but it’s true. I just think he is an incredible writer.
What’s one of your favorite things to do in your down time?
I have a five-year-old, so down time is kind of a distant memory for me. When I do have a few minutes to myself I like to watch movies where people get eaten up by monsters, like “The Host” and “Alien”. I also like to bake and to train for marathons (which is necessary because I keep baking things).
Which of your characters would you be most or least liking to invite or for dinner? And why?
I would definitely want Beezle for dinner. I don’t know how much eating I’d be doing, though – I’m sure I’d be too busy laughing. And Lucifer would probably be an interesting dinner companion, although I’d be wary of making any deals with him.
When did you consider yourself a writer?
When an editor from Ace called to offer me my first contract. That was an amazing moment.
How important do you think villains are in a book? Favorite book villain, any book?
Villains are necessary because you need conflict. Without conflict, there’s really no book. Nobody wants to read a book where everyone is nice and normal and has happy endings all the time. There might be a happy ending, but I think you want your hero/heroine to earn it – they have to struggle in order to get there.
My favorite book villain is probably Deputy Sheriff Lou Ford in Jim Thompson’s “The Killer Inside Me”.
What do you think makes a good story?
Great characters. If you have great characters you show them doing almost anything and it will be interesting. One of the best books I’ve ever read is “Nobody’s Fool” by Richard Russo – it’s just a masterpiece of characterization.
What was one of the most surprising things you’ve learned in/while creating your books?
That sometimes the story has a mind of its own. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been surprised by the way a story has turned out.
What advice do you have for would be authors?
Write, write, write! Don’t wait for your muse, or for the perfect sentence, or to be in just the right mood. That perfect time will probably never come. But if you start putting words on paper and keep doing it consistently then pretty soon you’ll have a manuscript. And once you have a manuscript you have something that you can shape and mold and perfect.
Once you do have a manuscript in hand, send it out. Don’t be afraid of getting rejected. Everyone gets rejections. It’s part of the process. And as you’re collecting rejections you can keep working on your writing. The only way to get better is to keep doing it.
