EXCERPT:
A few local surfers made their way out to the waves that were
growing in height as the storm approached. No lifeguard was on duty, but these
kids had grown up taking their chances on the water. It wouldn’t be a bad
storm, just enough to blow in some big waves and a strong shower or two.
I looked up and there was Julian looking out at the water. He
glanced down and smiled then bent his knees to squat beside me on the sand.
Seeing him made me feel almost happy.
“Waiting for someone?” he said.
“No. I just love when the weather’s like this.”
“Me, too. Great day to hang ten.”
“I don’t surf.”
“I’m still waiting to teach you.”
I looked up at him and considered for a few seconds how much of a
mistake it would be to take his hand and venture out into the swirling
currents. I was a pretty good swimmer, and I trusted Julian.
“Okay,” I said.
He pulled me up. “Let’s go.”
