Third Grave Dead Ahead
Darynda Jones
Hardcover, 320 Pages
Charley Davidson Book 3
Sci-fi/Fantasy
Publisher: St. Martin’s Press
ISBN: 9-781-25000-154-2
Release Date: January 31
Overall Rating: 5/5

Grim reaper extraordinaire. Whatever. Charley Davidson is back! And she’s drinking copious amounts of caffeine to stay awake because, every time she closes her eyes, she sees him: Reyes Farrow, the parthuman, part-supermodel son of Satan. Yes, she did imprison him for all eternity, but come on. How is she supposed to solve a missing persons case, deal with an ego-driven doctor, calm her curmudgeonly dad, and take on a motorcycle gang hellbent on murder when the devil’s son just won’t give up?

Charley. Charley. Charley.

Honestly one of my favorite female book characters, I mean what’s not to love she smart, sassy, funny, kick-ass, and totally ridiculous, I can’t get enough of her. Charley is back and there is no stopping her. Life for her is a bit different these days, being a grim reaper and a private investigator isn’t as easy as it used to be, due to the fact that Charley isn’t sleeping. Charley is drinking a crazy amount coffee so she can stay awake because every time she closes her eyes Reyes Farrow, her part-human, all gorgeous son of Satan haunts her every sleeping moment, and he’s none too happy about being there. Though to be fair Charley did trap him in corporal body and send him back to prison so I can understand him a bit pissed at her.

Ms. Jones has done it again.

What can I say about this except READ IT. Seriously I love this series and this book didn’t disappoint at all. Though I was kind of hoping that it never ended. Charley was on the hunt for the man Reyes went to jail for “killing”. Is he alive? Is he dead? No one knows, yet somebody know. I know but will I tell you? Not a chance. On top of that Charley has to deal with that fact that her dad wants her find a new jail and he won’t let the subject go.

This book made me laugh out loud too many times to count, it was really well written and so good. I can’t tell you that enough. I feel like the series keeps getting better with each book. There was one part I could have lived without but I won’t give anything anyway.

I recommend this series to everyone, you can’t go wrong this one.

Touch of Frost
Jennifer Estep
Mythos Academy Book 1
Reading level: Young Adult
Paperback: 336 pages
Publisher: Kensington;
ISBN-13: 978-0-75826-692-7
Release Date: July 26, 2011
Overall Rating: 4.5/5

Gwen frost is the new girl at the Mythos Academy, her mom just died and aside from her grandmother she’s alone. Gwen has always been able to “see” things by touching an object. But what Gwen isn’t able to see is why she’s at this school with descendents of the gods. With kids who have powers, warrior children, Gwen isn’t a warrior, she doesn’t fight and she doesn’t believe in the gods. So the question on her mind is why she’s at the school.
A loner with zero friends, Gwen keeps to herself but when one of her classmates dies in the library where Gwen works and no one else seem to care, she takes it upon herself to find out what happened. This adventure isn’t turning out the way Gwen thought it would be. Allies pop up in the most unlikely people, friendships are built, and questions are finally answered.

When I first saw that this book recommended to me on Amazon and I realized it dabbled in Greek mythology I knew I had to read it.  I’m so glad I did. I couldn’t enough of this book. I loved the whole thing. Gwen was a change pace and it was definitely welcomed. I am so tired of the new girl becoming popular two seconds after she walked in the door because life really isn’t like that. Gwen was a character I thought most teens could relate to. She was confident and insecure at the same time the way that most of us are. She was smart, at time funny and always herself. Slowly but surely she made friends with people who liked her for who she was and not because she was the prettiest or the richest but because she was always true to herself.

This book had all of the basics that I look for when reading a book, a solid plot, good storyline, likable characters, conflict, a touch of mystery, and a hint of romance okay more a than a hint. There was a lot of romance in this book, there was even a bit of love triangle but that didn’t overshadow the main point of the story.

I loved reading a book and getting lost into, reading the character grows and become more sure of themselves. Seeing how they handle the problems that are thrown their way.  This was a book I had to see the whole way through, I couldn’t put it down and finished it in one seating. I marked it down and find myself counting the days until I have the sequel in my hands. If you haven’t read this book yet what are you waiting for go get it.

Black Night
Christina Henry
Black Wings # 2
Urban Fantasy
Paperback: 288 pages
Published by: Ace
ISBN: 978-1-93700-706-5
Release Date: July 26, 2011
Overall Rating: 5/5

As an Agent of death Madeline Black escorts souls of the dead to the afterlife but that isn’t all that’s going on in Maddy’s life anymore. Things got so much harder when she found out her father was Azazel, bad guys were coming out of the deep end trying to kill her. But that was nothing compared to enemies heading her way now that everyone knows she’s Lucifer’s granddaughter. Maddy has to defend herself from foes coming at her from every angle, people who have scores with settle with both her father and grandfather, family members who want her out of the way. Now on top of that her bodyguard Gabriel, whom she loves and her gargoyle, Beezle who is more like family have both disappeared. If that wasn’t bad enough Maddy is going to other realms for delicate diplomatic missions on behalf of her grandfather, ones that may cost Maddy her life. . .

I loved this book maybe a little more than I loved the first one. Could Maddy’s life get any worse than it was before? Of course it could and it does.

Black Night starts off strong and stayed that way throughout the whole book. On the way home from helping a soul Maddy is attacked by something unknown, and she’s put on alert. Then while she’s with Gabriel and J.B. they come across a dead werewolf. So many things go wrong for Maddy in such a short amount of time that I have no idea how she deals with everything and keeps from falling apart. She’s attacked by some unknown magic, she finds the body of werewolf and she thinks she has a clue who doing it. Her half-brother Antares is trying to kill her at every turn because he hates the fact that she’s been named Azazel’s heir. Not only is Maddy facing werewolves who think she might be the one killing them, nephilim, fallen, and family but now she has to head to the Fae kingdom to handle some negotiations with their ruler Amarantha.  But things never seem to go easy for Maddy. So many things go down in this that I haven’t even covered it all.

I love when I read a book and it keeps me guessing the whole time that makes it so much better for me. And that’s just what Black Night did. I also loved all of the romantic tension in this book, there are three guys in Maddy’s life and I love it. There wasn’t much of Gabriel in this book and while I like him as a person I don’t think it would work between him and Maddy. I mean come on if a man can’t fight for what he wants its time to move on from him. Then there’s Nathaniel who I found myself liking him a lot in more this but he wouldn’t work with Maddy either. And finally there is J.B. who was a jerk but he grew on me and personally I think he would be great for Maddy.

This book was great everything about this book was great, the drama, the good guys, the bad guys, the plot, writing style. Everything. Honestly I loved all the characters, they each bought something unique and special to the storyline. The characters developed really well in this one, you see more of a lot of the characters. You get to see Maddy really grow and become her own woman, she matures and learns her powers and how to use them. No matter what was thrown at her she used her head and came out stronger than before. If I was picking a group of book heroines to become friends with you better believe Maddy would make the cut.

Ms. Henry is definitely one to watch out for and you can bet your ass I’ll be watching, and buying anything she comes out with. I most definitely can’t wait for book three, ii wish I had it in my hands right now.
