Character Interview with Alex from I Loved You First by Reena Jacobs

by - August 18, 2011

Today I will be interviewing the lovely Alex Carmichael from the book I Loved You First by Reena Jacob.

 I Loved You First synopsis:

My best friend was more than just a best friend to me. Three words summed it up: I heart him. I’d never tell him though. I wasn’t stupid. Besides, what he’d told no one, but me, was a little something I wished I could forget… or ignore. He was gay. I guess gay wouldn’t be bad if I wasn’t so in love with him. Now it was just cruel.

Stereotypes run amok in this college love story: Parties, alcohol, hookups, and breakups. Alexandria Carmichael may find it a bit much as she deals with the unreturned love from the boy who completes her. When all is revealed, not only does she risk losing her best friend forever, but also herself. Without her childhood companion for support, Alexandria takes a journey of self-discovery but fears what she’ll find at the end.

The last four questions (8-11) of this interview contents spoilers they will be hidden. If wish you want to read them all you have to is click the button that says show/hide. All About Alex

1. What did you want to be when you grew up?

A veterinarian. My mother rarely let me have a pet, so I thought that was the way to play with all the animals I wanted. After my mother told me I had to work mostly with sick animals, I didn't find the idea as cool.

2. Who was your hero growing up?

I guess it's kinda obvious, right? Seth.

3. What was your most embarrassing moment?

I'd rather not say. Those are things I'd like to forget and hope others will too. :)

4. What was the happiest moment in your childhood?
The birthday I got my driver's license. I'm older than Seth, you know. :) By three months. I let him sit in the front like a big boy... most of the time.

 5. What is one thing in your child/teenage years that you wish you could go back and change?
I wish I hadn't tried to turn my friendship with Seth into something else.

Harder Questions

6. What was your first reaction when you first realized you were in love with Seth?
Joy, fear, hope. If you've ever been in love, you know exactly what I mean. Then I had a moment of despair.

7. Why do you think is the real reason you stayed with Seth all of the time and never hung out with anyone else?
I didn't need anyone else... not when I had Seth. He's comfortable, you know? Like a favorite pair of jeans.

  1. I really thought a lot about what would have happened if Seth and Alex had ended up together--if he had developed a love for her that was like her love for him. I agree--I am not sure that it would have been happy ever after. I think part of Seth would always want something different, even if he never acted on it and even if he did not conscientially admit it. I could not imagine living like that forever.

    Great interview!!

  2. Thanks for having me, Bo0kJunki3. One of these days, I'm going to learn how to do that hide thing you did. Very cool.

It's difficult trying to be someone you're not. Eventual the truth emerges, and it's not always pretty when it does. Life isn't perfect, but often we can take what we do have and transform it into something wonderful.
