My two favourite quotes about friendship.

I’m extremely lucky to have not one but two people in my life who I consider best friends and both do exactly that. Any sane, normal person would have cut me off years ago with some of the crap I’ve pulled and done. But, C, one of the two, is neither sane nor normal (sorry, sweetie, you know it’s true). She is the type to tell it like it is whether I want to hear it or not because in the end (usually) what she says is true and it just saves a lot of time and heartache -not to mention the I-told-you-so’s she loves to throw in my face-if I just listen to her from the start. C is my family, blood or no blood, because in the end no matter what we throw at each other we’ll always be there to hold each other up.

My other best friend is my rock. He’s the one that I want to run to for everything. Good or bad he’s there to either praise me or give me hell for something I’ve done…or not done and should do. Our friendship has always been the type that no matter how long it has been since we last spoke – days, weeks, months – we can always pick up right where we left off like no time at all has passed.

Friends are the key to making it out alive in this world. You might not make it out in one piece but good friends – great friends- will always be there to help you put those pieces together again.

That’s why I knew when writing Novalee’s best friend she would have to be someone strong, outspoken, and feisty and a little bit of a bitch.

Cali is all of those things. She is everything Novalee isn’t…until she has to be. Even as a secondary character I feel as if she was the heart of the book. You can’t help but roll your eyes at some of the things that come out of her mouth, but others have you laughing or nodding in agreement when she’s giving Novalee a piece of her mind.

I love the bond these two have, but there were times I wanted to reach through my computer screen and shake one or both of them. While writing I had to stop a few times and just glare at the words, angry at Novalee for taking advantage of the friendship. There were times that Novalee came off as very selfish and really, while I admit I hated it in the beginning, I love that their relationship wasn’t perfect.

What I really wanted to portray though was the depth of their friendship. Cali saved Novalee from a very tragic experience, and while Novalee gets to tell her side of that, it was never really talked about between the two and how Cali felt about it in my first draft of editing. When going back through for the millionth time, I decided Cali needed a little more depth and Novalee, finally taking her head out of her own ass, gets her to open up about the incident.

It goes without saying that Cali is the one that teaches Novalee to be a stronger person. Through hand holding and eye rolling the women learn from one another, have each other’s backs and do sneaky things to ensure the other one is happy.

I hope everyone out there is as lucky as Novalee and Cali are and have someone that has your back and will always be there with a shoulder to cry on and a pint of Ben and Jerry’s.
